Naismith Trophy National Coach of the Year Semifinalists
ATLANTA, GA. - Seton Hall University head women's basketball coach Anthony Bozzella has been named a semifinalist for the Naismith Trophy Women's College Basketball National Coach of the Year Tuesday it was announced by the Atlanta Tipoff Club.
Bozzella, who is one of 10 national semifinalists in the running for the prestigious award, was named the BIG EAST Women's Basketball Coach of the Year earlier Tuesday.
In just his second season at Seton Hall, Bozzella has guided the Pirates to a 26-4 overall record and a 15-3 mark in BIG EAST play, capturing the program's first-ever BIG EAST regular season crown and the No. 1 seed in the conference tournament. The Pirates re-entered the Associated Press Top-25 at No. 25 on Monday, and were ranked No. 23 in the latest USA Today/Coaches Top-25 poll, making it the first time this year and since Jan. 31, 1995, the Pirates were ranked in both national poll simultaneously.
Entering the postseason, Seton Hall has 26 victories and sits just one win shy of matching the program standard, established during the 1993-94 season which saw the Pirates advance to the NCAA Sweet 16. That was also the last season SHU won at least 15 conference games, that squad went 16-2, but finished second in the league.
Seton Hall started the year with a 13-1 record, matching the best start to that point in the season and the longest winning streak in team history, rattling off 12-consecutive victories. The Pirates went on to post a 21-2 record for the first time, and The Hall's 10-1 start to BIG EAST play also matched the program record.
In two seasons under Bozzella the Pirates have been very difficult to beat at home. Dating back to the end of last year, Seton Hall matched the school record with 20-straight wins inside of Walsh Gym, and the Pirates are 32-6 at home over the last two seasons, including a 17-1 mark this year.
The Pirates have experienced a great deal of success thanks in large part to the fast-paced offensive system Bozzella has implemented. Seton Hall is on pace to easily surpass the program single-season scoring record, averaging 76.2 ppg, and the Pirates set a single-game record with 107 points in a win over DePaul, and had the fourth-highest offensive output with 99 points in a victory at Georgetown.
As the top seed in the BIG EAST Tournament, Seton Hall will face either No. 8 seed Marquette or No. 9 seed Providence in the BIG EAST Quarterfinals at Allstate Arena in Rosemont, Ill., on Sunday, March 8, at 12 p.m. (CT). The game will be nationally televised on Fox Sports 2.
