Senior Night was bittersweet for Brandon Mobley
NEWARK—For a half, the old Seton Hall men’s basketball team resurfaced at the Prudential Center Wednesday night.
Then reality set in.
Shredded by Providence point guard Kris Dunn and crushed on the boards, the Pirates squandered a 15-point lead and fell 79-66 before a crowd of about 4,500.
“It’s a good learning lesson for these guys, understanding how well we can play and how bad we can play,” Seton Hall coach Kevin Willard said, later adding, “We have to make sure we stay focused for 40 minutes. It’s tough this time of year with this many young guys. We’re having one or two breakdowns per game and it’s different guys each time.”
NO. 24 Providence was in a 15-point first half hole after Seton Hall came out of the gates throwing the first punches, but a 17-1 run sparked by Big East Player of the Year candidate Kris Dunn turned the game around, providing the Friars with a 79-66 win and a regular season sweep of the Hall.
Seton Hall began the game playing together as a unit while Providence made their living from the line and second chance points (20-0). The Hall assisted on 10 of 13 first half buckets, manifesting itself in a 16-2 run midway through the period that was sparked by three straight three-pointers that were assisted by Isaiah Whitehead. The Friars would narrow their 15-point deficit by rattling off an 8-1 run that included six free throws to close the half.
Providence built on their 8-1 half-closing run by riding the hot hand of Kris Dunn, who was held scoreless with just 1 assist in the first half, after the break. Dunn assisted or scored 21 of the Friars' 23 points coming out of the locker room, building a 17-1 run that flipped the game on its head prior to a Sterling Gibbs triple. Seton Hall's flowing offense came to an abrupt halt early in the second half and was knocked completely off the rails against Providence's zone.
Dunn's stellar play continued as he nearly tallied a triple-double, finishing with 17 pts, 8 asts, and 7 rebs while LaDontae Henton put up 21 pts and 7 rebs. Isaiah Whitehead (13 pts, 4 asts) drilled several second half triples that kept the Pirates in it, senior Brandon Mobley added 13 pts.
Seton Hall drops to 16-13 (6-11) as Providence improves to 21-9 (11-6) and is still alive for a 2-seed in the Big East Tournament.
