Rick Barnes’ seat as Texas Basketball coach should be hot
February 22, 2015 by Matthew Hamill
Texas Basketball’s season is coming to a disappointing end. What started as an optimistic campaign with hope is ending with defeat and average play. This situation begs the question, how much more mediocrity and lackluster basketball will Texas athletic director Steve Patterson put up with?
Texas seem to have a habit of relying on a coaches tenure and past achievements when considering making a coaching change or not. The prime example of course is Mac Brown. In the years leading to Brown’s “retirement” you could not listen to sports talk radio in Austin without hearing fans wanting Brown to get sacked. However because he won it all in 2005 Brown was immune.

Texas had to hire a new athletic director with some passion for victory before finally getting Brown to step down. Average performances and underachieving became acceptable under the previous athletic director DeLoss Dodds. Steve Patterson needs to ask Rick Barnes, “what have you done for me recently?”
Take a look at Rick Barnes’ record in the last four years and it isn’t good. In that span Texas have double digit losses every season and are winning 59.2% of their games. Arguably the best NBA talent Texas produced during that time is Tristan Thompson, who is now wrecking havoc alongside LeBron James.
Texas Basketball is in free-fall this season. They are near the bottom of the Big-12 standings and have no quality victories this season, none! Beating Connecticut and West Virginia isn’t very impressive. Especially when you get blown out by Oklahoma at home, crushed by Baylor, and swept by Oklahoma State. The Horns are 2-7 against ranked opponents this season, not good for a resume desperate to be included in the NCAA Tournament.
The Longhorns are going to lose more games before this season is over. Their play hasn’t given fans any indication to think otherwise. If this slide continues this team won’t make the tournament. Which is unacceptable considering UT’s the talent, ability to recruit, and facilities in which they train and practice.
Rick Barnes’ career numbers, does he deserve to keep his job?
Although Barnes has completely turned around this Texas Basketball program he hasn’t done enough recently to merit job immunity. Early tournament exits and never playing the upset role has hindered this team over the years. Perhaps a coaching change would ignite this basketball program.
