Upsets are the hallmark of the NCAA tournament. Notre Dame managed to survive against Northeastern in the first game of this year's round of 64, but 14th-seeded UAB knocked off 3rd-seeded Iowa State on Thursday.
This is the third consecutive year that a No. 14 seed has beaten a No. 3 seed. Mercer defeated Duke last year, and Harvard beat New Mexico in 2013.

No. 14 UAB vs. No. 3 Iowa State
The Blazers beat the Cyclones, 60-59, for their first NCAA tournament win since 2005. Robert Brown, a redshirt junior transfer from Virginia Tech, led all scorers with 21 points. UAB frustrated Iowa State star Georges Niang, limiting him to just 11 points on 4-15 shooting.
No. 14 Georgia State vs. No. 3 Baylor
This is only the second time ever that two No. 14 seeds have won their opening games. The last time was in 1995 when Old Dominion defeated Villanova in triple overtime and Weber State beat Michigan state.
Junior guard R.J. Hunter hit the game-winning three-pointer with under three seconds to play. His coach, and father, Ron, was so excited he fell out of his chair.
No. 11 UCLA vs. No. 6 SMU
Down 59-58 and with time expiring, UCLA guard Bryce Alford, the son of UCLA coach Steve Alford, launched a shot to win the game that bounced off the front rim. SMU's Yannick Moriera, however, was called for goal-tending on the play, putting UCLA up 60-59. SMU would miss two final shot attempts, and the Bruins would win the game.
No. 10 Ohio State vs. No. 7 VCU
Despite facing a double-digit deficit in the first half, Ohio State rallied before halftime to close the gap to just one point. After a back-and-forth second half ended in a stalemate, the Buckeyes claimed a 75-72 victory in overtime. Ohio State guard D'Angelo Russell led the team with 28 points. He also had six rebounds and two blocks.
