Tyus Jones scored 23 points and Grayson Allen added 16 off the bench as Duke beat Wisconsin to win their fifth national title under head coach Mike Krzyzewski, 68-63, over the Wisconsin Badgers.
Jones made every big shot for the Blue Devils down the stretch, sticking three of the biggest jump shots that he will ever make to help Duke gain control in the final minutes.
Duke overcame a rough night from star center Jahlil Okafor, who had just six points and two boards while committing a pair of turnovers and missing shot after shot around the rim. He spent much of the evening in foul trouble, as Frank Kaminsky completely outplayed him.
Despite his struggles, Okafor took the game over down the stretch. It started with a bucket on a post up that put Duke up 61-58 with three minutes left on the clock. On the ensuing possession, despite having four fouls, Okafor got a stop on Kaminsky, forcing the National Player of the Year into a pair of missed shots that, eventually, led to a shot clock violation. He followed up a missed shot to put the Blue Devils up five on the next possession, and then played a major role in forcing Bronson Koenig into a miss at the other end.
Wisconsin seemed to pull away from the Blue Devils midway through the second half, using a 17-8 surge to start the half, which opened up a 48-39 lead. But Duke freshman guard Grayson Allen sparked the comeback. Allen scored 10 of his 16 points after the halftime, but it was a string of three huge plays in a succession — a three, a steal and driving layup at the other end — that sparked Duke’s comeback.
The surge was capped off by a Tyus Jones jumper that capped a 17-6 run and put the Blue Devils back ahead, 56-54.
