Tennessee Volunteers report secondary violationKNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- The Tennessee Volunteers have reported a secondary violation to the NCAA that occurred during the one-year tenure of fired men's basketball coach Donnie Tyndall. According to documents obtained in a public records request, Tyndall's staff had two phone calls with a potential student-athlete without receiving permission to contact him. The student-athlete in question already had been released from his letter of intent to another school. The coaches involved received education on the NCAA rules relevant to the case. Tennessee's report describes it as a secondary/Level III violation. The Knoxville News-Sentinel first reported the circumstances of the violation. Tyndall was fired in March after Tennessee officials decided the NCAA was likely to determine he committed serious violations while coaching Southern Mississippi from 2012 to 2014. Southern Mississippi is currently under NCAA investigation.
